This year's BET Awards show will continue its tradition of honoring the best of the best in Black music, entertainment, and sports. The show will be hosted for the first time by actor/comedian Damon Wayans and will include such categories as the Lifetime Achievement Award; Humanitarian Award; Best Group; Best Gospel Artist; Video of the Year; and Best New Artist.

When the red carpet is rolled out on June 27 in front of the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, you can expect tight security and even tighter fashion statements. Hollywood will surely have pen and paper (and camera) on hand, ready to profile the hottest-looking sistas and the coolest-dressed brothas at the show.

The BET Awards Show is in its 6th year of honoring achievement in Black entertainment, and the show remains television's most-watched awards program among African-American viewers and Blacks around the world.

BET will also pay tribute to two special honorees who have been instrumental in music and the community. Eight time Grammy Award winner Chaka Khan will receive the BET Lifetime Achievement Award for her extensive recording career which includes 3 platinum albums; 7 gold singles (including "Ain't Nobody" and "I'm Every Woman"); 10 #1 Ramp;B Billboard hits; and 4 American Music Award nominations.

Receiving the BET Humanitarian Award is musician, actor, and social activist, Harry Belafonte. Belafonte will be honored for his extraordinary support of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and humanitarian causes throughout his career.

BET Awards '06 will air live on Tuesday, June 27 from Los Angeles’s historic Shrine Auditorium at 8 p.m. (EST), with a tape delay to Mountain and Pacific Time Zones.

This year’s event will feature a new award category, the "BET J Cool Like That" Award, with nominees Eric Benét, Anthony Hamilton, Heather Headley, Kindred the Family Soul, Corinne Bailey Rae.
