Why Black Engineers Choose The Military

Alexandria, VA - Fifty years ago, the military offered one of the few avenues of upward mobility for African Americans. Today, affirmative action has removed many obstacles, and the career horizons of talented blacks in this country are considerably wider.

So why are many members of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) now looking to the military for employment?

See how well the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force and Department of Defense fared in NSBE's Annual Employer Preference Survey this year, and hear why NSBE members are "Choosing the Military," in the Nov/Dec 2006 Careers Issue of NSBE Magazine.

"This is one of those cases where the numbers didn't fit with conventional wisdom," says NSBE Magazine Editor Eric Addison. "While many of us in the media have been focused on the troubles in Iraq and other negatives associated with military careers, many of the young people who make up this organization have been seeing opportunities."

NSBE Magazine has been published for more than 20 years in support of NSBE's mission, which is "to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community." The award-winning publication is distributed to NSBE's 19,000-plus members in the U.S. and abroad, as well as other subscribers.

The 2006 Careers Issue of NSBE Magazine also includes a special, four-part section on "Engineers and Immigration"; a review of "Promising Sectors for Engineers"; an in-depth examination of the demand for engineers in different specialties, and more.
