Malcolm Scarver, Jr.|
School: Fisk University
Major Concentration: Political Science-Public Administration
Fisk University Student Government Association President 2009-2010
Daniel Malcolm Scarver Jr. is a senior at Fisk University and hails from Bay Shore, New York. Scarver will soon graduate with a Political Science and Public Administration degree and continue his education by pursuing his Jurist Doctorate in graduate school. Scarver aims to become a practicing civil rights attorney to represent those individuals who have been misrepresented and silenced in the arena of justice.
Scarver is building a broad network and filling a resume by his involvement in several activities. Currently serving as Fisk University’s Student Government Association President, Scarver is also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society, the Fisk University Student Ambassador, and part of the W.E.B. Honors Program and U.S. Public Service Academy.
Scarver’s parents have been a big influence in his life and he continually honors and respects them for the many lessons they taught. "The creation of life is one of the greatest gifts we can give as human beings," Scarver said. "The invaluable knowledge, along with character, humility, and compassion are important."
Scarver upholds these values because he believes they are crucial to being a good leader. He also believes they are important to being a good parent. In the future, Daniel hopes to become a parent who can model his parenting skills after his mother and father’s. He feels that great parenting will be an inspiration to his children—especially if he can provide the same quality teaching his parents provided to him.
As the SGA President at Fisk University, Scarver is responsible for representing the students of Fisk in the highest capacity. "When I ran for SGA President, I placed a strong emphasis on bringing Fisk University together with students having a stake in the decisions that are made at our university. As the elected student leader, I value integrity because it is the essential component in moving our student body into a positive direction," Scarver explained.
During election week, students were made aware of Scarver’s values and his dedication to transforming the university. "The Student Government Association has the mission of putting our students’ interest first and empowering students to become the future leaders of tomorrow,” Scarver said.
Scarver also has strong opinions about black society and the roles black men play. "I believe the identity of black men in America is progressing in a positive direction," Scarver said. "Over the years, we have become known for our high levels of intellect, talent, and temperament. My concept of the ideal black man is my father, who epitomizes the values of humility, responsibility, and diligence. It is through his display of character that I am able to understand the components of being a successful black man. Black males need that positive reinforcement of character and values through positive black male role models in all aspects of their life."
