"These people had jobs and property before the Arab Janjaweed militia burned their villages, raped their women and killed their children.", Clooney said.

Oprah show correspondent Lisa Ling also traveled to the Darfur region and chronicled the stories of women and children who have been raped, tortured, and kept as sex slaves of a rebel group called the Lord's Resistance Army - or LRA. Led by Joseph Kony, who reportedly believes that he is God, the LRA consists of abducted children who were kidnapped from their families.

Criticisms
Not a day goes by that Black Americans neglect to question why more isn't being done to help stop the genocide in Sudan, and why throughout history, the U.S. government has failed to react to wars and famine throughout Africa.

Some speculate that since many north African regions have no commodities to offer the U.S. (such as oil and other exports), the U.S. government has no financial or political interest in the area. What would the Western world gain by providing food, clothing, shelter, security, and other types of humanitarian aid to the Sudanese region of Darfur?

The U.S. and other world powers will not receive tangible goods, or an economic trade agreement by providing support to ethnic Africans of Sudan. But this genocide is not about give and take, and the world needs to understand that.

Not since the atrocities in Rwanda during the early 90s has the world seen a campaign of starvation, rape, displacement, and death.

Without immediate action, the world will surely see more devastation in Darfur and other African regions for years to come.
