The popular little blue pill by drugmaker Pfizer, has racked up nearly $1.8 billion in sales each year since it was introduced in 1998. But the hype surrounding another drug Cialis®, which is produced through a joint venture between Eli Lilly and Icos, has started a friendly competition between the two erectile dysfunction drug producers.

Both drugs are able to help men with erectile dysfunction achieve and maintain an erection. While Viagra® (sildenafil citrate) boasts about being the first marketable drug to treat erectile dysfunction, Cialis gives men a much longer time to experience erections.

Here are the facts, side by side:

Viagra remains the most popular and most prescribed of the two drugs, but Cialis (sometimes called, "Super Viagra") is rapidly gaining more attention due to its longer duration. The 36-hour window gives men a much longer time to plan sexual activity which is important to many men who experience erectile dysfunction.

Keep in mind that the Cialis 36-hour timeframe denotes the period in which an erection can be achieved. However, neither Eli Lilly/Icos or Pfizer conducts studies on the number of erections that may be achieved during the timeframes in which their drugs are effective.

If you experience erectile dysfunction, talk to your doctor about trying an ED drug. The success rates for both drugs are extremely high, but you should not take Viagra or Cialis if:

• Drugs containing nitrates (i.e. nitroglycerin (sprays, ointments, skin patches or pastes, and tablets that are swallowed or dissolved in the mouth), isosorbide mononitrate and isosorbide dinitrate (tablets that are swallowed, chewed, or dissolved in the mouth)
• You have ever had a stroke (consult your doctor)
• You have low or high blood pressure (consult your doctor)
• You have ever had severe vision loss (consult your doctor)
• You have ever had any kidney problems (consult your doctor)
• You have ever had any liver problems (consult your doctor)
• You have ever had any blood problems, including sickle cell anemia or leukemia (consult your doctor)
