It's been said that Brotha's don't read
I'd like to know if there has ever been a survey done on this. Some say, that if you want to plot against the Black man, put it in a book. wow, we're still being laughed at, even in the 21st century.

Yeah... Ive heard that statement before. It's a shame because there are a lot of brothas who don't read. Even more sad I saw some stats (may or may not have been on this site) that said black men don't use the internet as much as black women, or white people.

All that info out there and brothas ain't using it.

I've heard books are like Kryponite to blacks.

I must be immune cause I was a reading fool when I was a youngster. I was held back in the first grade because of my reading problems. By 4th grade I was two grades ahead. Sometimes you just need to apply reading in a fun way.

Reading is so important. It's more informative than watching TV, it builds your vocabulary and teaches focus and patience. The more TV our kids watch the less time they spend developing the aformentioned attributes.

Hate to say it, but it's true for the most part. Most Black men I know who are my age (25-35), don't read at all.

The only ones I know of who do read, are older gentlemen. Not saying there aren't any young brothas reading (Hmurchison says he's a bookworm!), but the numbers are a lot lower than Black women.

Hello again Jack,
When I said I was an african american male that reads, and a co-worker was so surprised, I was under the assumption that I could not say anything about my book that I wrote. So again on the issue of black don't read I guess the forum seems to things thats true across the board. Well in my case that is not true. I'm a black male, and a black author. My book is about the intricacies of manhood. It's called False Roads To Manhood, What Women Need To Know; What Men Need To Understand. I did not put it on the main page because i thought it was against the rules. You can find the book on Amazon and Barnes and Noble Online and at www.fcpublishing.com. Many of the people who have read my book are African American Men and a bunch of women. Jerry, I may not be sure how to place this on the main site.

I can say this about the subject also. I've had some black men tell me they don't like reading, but I challenge them expecially since I've written a book. In any case, my book has been featured on mybrotha.com website for some time now on Spotlight on successful brothas. My challenge to all is to go there just to read about that part on the my brotha site. That's a start.

I ain't gonna lie and act like I read all the time, cuz I dont. Actually I hardly ever sit and read a whole novel. I guess I get bored to quick. But I do read articles and stuff on the internet. Most books arent like trek's stuff. Most books are about he said/she said, sex, bad relationships and stuff like that. How do books like that help people? Is is just entertainment? I guess it is.

Im proud to say that im a book reader for the simple reason i needed somthing that i could relate to at the time . I was walking in walmart one day and saw this book called "Married but still looking" by Travis Hunter, the very first book i have ever completed alone lol , after that i was hooked , i must agree that after a while they seem to be the same, but those books can and will help any one out with there spelling, paragraph writing, proper punctuation and vocabulary

I agree. Reading helps in so many ways with comprehension, focus, vocabulary and more. I find that I just get irritated with the televison and I need some peace and quiet. I spend too much time on the internet but it's peaceful and you mainly read stuff so I get my daily fill.

My son has to read. I may even institute a "quiet time" in the home where TVs must be turned off and quiet activities can commence. Don't know if there's actually enough time in the night for this though but maybe on the weekends.

I'm afraid that I personally know three black males and more who've bought my book and will not read it. For the life of me I don't know why. I ask them why and I get excuses, but what I think it really is, they're afraid of what I might say that will go behind the gated wall of their hearts. One co-worker told me, he read the first two pages and had to close the book. I asked why, he said it was getting to his heart. So here's another option from my perspective, my book is non-fiction, so that clues you in that there's truth in it about men. Are we afraid to face the truth and that's why we don't read or are we truly lazy. For a man to be without knowledge is not good. Reading is important, so I challenge people to read my book. I put a dare out to some men. Some take the dare. Some just say, because you are a black author, I just want to support you. That's all good but why not read it too, I'd say. I guess some men are readers and some are not, but those who are not will not get very far in life. Reading stimulate brain cells, and if we're not reading, we are dying.

Im a brotha who loves to read. When I look around in a book store most of the time Im the only brotha there, and if there are any others they are older. Im 24 and have loved to read for years. I write and all that. I think most young black men want to be so hard and care too much about what others think, they dont allow themselves to do things outside of their box. I always encourage other brothas to read some of the material Im reading but most just find time to do everything else but read.
