The State of Black and White relations

http://www.mybrotha.com/race_relations.asp

Racism does seem to be on the rise. It seems to be fostered by the
current Presidential Administration which is hateful and divisive towards gays and foreigners not to mention citizen privacy.

America's problem isn't going to be fixed easily. Many of us have tolerance issues that need to be checked. We still have real estate agents "Steering" (sending gays, blacks, latinos to the "appropriate" neighborhoods). We still have gentrification pushing low income minorities out of ears.

When you have a homogenous community you have the recipe for hate to grow because there is no effective counterpoint. If everyone looks like you it become easier to demonize societies problems on those "different" people across the train tracks.

Education is also key. Racism is fueled by the same factors that fuel gang membership. A need to feel like you belong and are protected. Youngsters are prone to entereing gangs or espousing racism as a way to fit in and establish a persona. Education can prevent this but the kind of education needed is not preaching but simply affirming that a person can be different and special yet still fit in to society and be productive. Many people are not getting this message.

I feel you on that. I sometimes believe that racism is so ingrained in our culture, that it can't be wiped out until generations change. The trick, of course, is to convince the next generation that racism is negative.

I read the article and I especially agreed with the part about intraracism. I'm a dark-skinned sista and believe it or not, that type of "light-skinned/dark-skinned" stuff still goes on in the black community.

It's a shame.

In my opinion black people and white people will never get along. I know that is a bad way to see it but even today kids are still picking on each other because of their skin color. People cant get jobs because of their skin color. Like sarina said, we might just have to wait a few generations for that to clean itself up.

Not that we should not try but some things take a loooooooooooong time!

It's almost a human condition which states that we must all be insecure and intolerant. I think the more comfortable a person is with themselves the less need they have to try and differentiate themselves.

Sadly, our society teaches us classism and racism from day 1 seemingly. Humans have a natural desire to understand as well and thus when they see a black they think of characteristics they believe are associated with blacks. Toss an Asian in there and those characteristics and attributes are likely to change.

We can eradicate this but only with a total revamping of our society and culture. Good look on that.

Yes... which is why I still believe it's going to take a generation before we totally remove racism. Hopefully, it's something that can be eradicated over a few decades.

Racism is not gonna just work itself out, we have to do the working. It is hard when the odds are against you. Being black in America is still hard, but we need to come together first to gain a better understanding of who we are. Then we can work out our differences with the other races.

That is the real problem, we do not know how to come together. Back in the day when I was a kid growing up, there was more unity among blacks. Now, it seems that we look down at each other because of either being to ghetto or trying to be too white. Out of all the human races in the world, we are the first known species in the beginning of time. And we can not even get along with ourselves. It is sad.

Well other than at the community level how are we to organize? I think therein is the rub. We are so wholly dependent as a nation/globe on the television and newspaper being our primary source of information it puts those who cannot or do not own media establishments at the whim of those who do.

On a National level it will be very difficult for us to unite on certain issues because there are precious few black owned/themed newspapers and even fewer media outlets for television.

You cannot trust that establishments aimed at a non-black demographic to really "understand" the issues of the black communities today. We must find some way to improve ourselves via support and getting the message out.

Sadly...I'm at a loss for how that gets done.

You're not the only one. If there was a quick solution to this, this country would be a better place for all of us. But like others have said, there is to much inter-conflict with black people; too many blacks look down on one another; won't help one another. It's a mindset and I don't think anything will change on any level, until that mindset changes.

It starts with the children. From their earliest teachings. They are either taught to respect people of all colors, or they are taught NOT to respect people of all colors.

Its just that simple.

You can start trying to positively influence kids at a later age, or even adults. But if they come from, and go back to, a home where people of differing color are treated in a dehumanizing fashion either in person, or in the media, then that is the message the child learns all too quickly.

...learns to ACT ON all too disgustingly.

I was about to launch into a line about white children learning to drop N-bombs from their parents or older siblings... but the sad truth is that they could just as easily get it from our OWN. Cosby took a LOT of heat for remarks he made about us (Yes, I too am a Black man) some time ago, but the man was NOT wrong.

IMO Black children need to be INFUSED with a sense of pride, dignity, and SELF LOVE. This armor of self-respect needs to be just that. It does not build up a Black child when s/he hears us tearing down other races.
