Magazine For Black Men Grows in 2009 By Mybrotha.COM Staff Writer - December 16, 2009
(Mybrotha.COM) - By the time we reached August 2009, several significant events affecting African-American men had occurred. We inaugurated the country's first black president; we were saddened by the death of entertainment's greatest music legend; and a rocky economy caused millions to lose jobs.
In January, Barack Obama took the oath of office and became America’s 44th president. It was an inspirational and historic event for black men, the Black community and people everywhere.
June brought the untimely death of entertainment’s greatest entertainer—Michael Jackson—who was music’s biggest social and cultural influence during the 1970s, 80s and 90s.
The entire year was marred by an economic crisis that produced failed banks, a crumbling auto industry and millions of lost jobs. African-American men, who make up a large portion of unemployed auto and manufacturing workers, were among the hardest hit.
Mybrotha.COM brought its readers these stories, but the popular website also continued to deliver its core set of resources which are intended to encourage, support and empower black men.
A leading online magazine for African-American men, Mybrotha.COM offers revealing stories, articles, and educational content for black men around the world. Since its creation in early 2002, Mybrotha.COM has consistently provided its readers with a steady supply of relationship advice, men’s health articles, community stories, news events, job listings, and inspirational content.
"Mybrotha.COM grew tremendously in 2009, and our goal is to give readers what they want," said Mybrotha.COM founder Clark Solomon. "With more and more black men surfing the Internet each year, we continue to see huge increases in visitors, and we expect those numbers to grow in 2010."
Throughout the year, the magazine launched several features that helped contribute to its growth. Campus Kings—a section profiling the best and brightest black male college students—has received a lot of positive feedback. Social networking integration with sites like Facebook and Twitter allows readers to easily link to any Mybrotha.COM article. Readers also noticed more men’s health articles and wellness advice; an enhanced job search capability through its partnership with CareerBuilder; and a section offering coupon savings from merchants selling items targeting the male consumer.
"I visit the site everyday," said James R.E. Daltrey, an auto mechanic from South Carolina. "There really aren’t many websites where black men can get positive information about men’s issues, but Mybrotha is definitely one that delivers the good stuff."
Current readers and newcomers can expect more outstanding content in 2010. The site will begin featuring video interviews with African-American men who offer their opinions on a variety of topics. Also expected in 2010, more exclusive deals from retail partners, more men’s fashion and style tips, and more in-depth relationship advice.
"Some people think black men are complicated. But in reality, we’re fairly simple," Solomon explained. "We just want good jobs, healthy relationships, encouragement and respect. Mybrotha.COM wants to help bring all of those things to as many black men as possible."
Mybrotha.COM is a black-owned magazine featuring articles and content for and about black men. Since February 2002, the magazine has enjoyed a growing reader-base consisting of all races from every corner of the world. Mybrotha.COM aims to provide enrichment and empowerment to the African-American male and black men everywhere. For more information, visit: www.mybrotha.com.
