The 9th Annual San Francisco Black Film Festival

Festival dates: June 7-10 and 14-17, 2007. Film and Screenplay Entry Deadlines: January 15 and February 15, 2007

San Francisco, CA -- The San Francisco Black Film Festival announced its call for entries. Narrative features, documentaries, shorts, animation, experimental, student works and television productions on film, video and digital media, which have been completed after January 1, 2006 may be submitted. Films should be written/directed or produced by an African or African American or feature Africans or African Americans in prominent roles.

San Francisco Black Film Festival also promotes and celebrates the work of visionary filmmakers with a special award competition. Established in the name of producer, actor and director Melvin Van Peebles, the Maverick Award acknowledges emerging filmmakers for taking the types of risks required to present unique and authentic images of Blacks on film.

Founded in 1998 to illuminate the range, depth and diversity of the African-American experience, the San Francisco Black Film Festival has been a driving force integrating the work of independent Black filmmakers into the mainstream. The festival's mission is to celebrate African American cinema and the African cultural diaspora and to showcase a diverse collection of films -- from emerging and established filmmakers that highlight the beauty and complexity of the African and African American experience. Our film selections highlight the richness of Black culture while recognizing universal themes and the similarities that exist among all cultures.

Presenting an array of work from South Africa, Brazil, Canada, Italy, France, the United Kingdom and the United States, the festival presents a broad spectrum of subjects from socio-economics to streetwise urban culture. The SFBFF has evolved into an established forum for the cinematic community and draws a vibrant mix of established filmmakers, emerging artists, celebrities, critics and film fans from around the world.
