Profile
Wil Seegars is a success oriented African-American brotha who presents a positive image in and around the Detroit community, his classroom, and to young Black men around the country.

Seegars is the creator of the popular game "HipHopSkillz", a board-game designed to increase awareness of the positives in hip-hop music and its history.

He began developing the game while studying at Eastern Michigan University (EMU), where he graduated in 2000 with a degree in education.

"This started out as a thematic unit for me to do student teaching when I was in undergraduate," says Seegars, an instructor at University Preparatory Academy. "It grew into something. I was really doing nothing but being a fan of hip hop and trying to pass this on to young people."

Seegars thrives as an educator, businessman, entrepreneur, visionary, and owner/CEO of "Generations To Come", a Michigan-based company providing innovative entertainment and products that focus on the hip-hop market.

Seegars credits EMU's College of Education with encouraging him to explore ways to teach Standard English by using the history and culture of hip-hop.

The game's four subject areas: "Knowledge", "Translations", "Quotes", and "Challenges" -- stimulate respect and admiration for culture, history, rhyming, memory, phonemic awareness and other contributions of minority groups to American culture. The artists, translations, and quotes are designed to test players' knowledge of hip-hop culture, encouraging young people to get to know the music, to harness their listening skills and to pay attention to what they are hearing.

Adding to his list of achievements as an educator and mentor, Seegars was recently asked to speak at the HipHop Summit in New York City, and to be a guest speaker at a world wide teacher's conference.

The website HipHopSkillz.com, features a forum, chatroom, featured artists and guests, contests, and links to purchase the board-game.

Mybrotha Poll
Should President Obama have a national discussion about race before leaving office?
Yes. There is too much racism, and he is the perfect one to address it.
Maybe. It wouldn't hurt to talk about, but I'm not sure if it will help.
No. He's the president--it's not his job to fix racial issues.
