How Testosterone Therapy May Help Men

(Mybrotha.COM) - It's Saturday night and the big game is on. You're enjoying the hard hitting action on your 50" plasma television, and then it happens: You notice that every other commercial is a promotion for Viagra® or Cialis®, the world’s most popular erectile dysfunction medications.

Pfizer and Lilly USA, the drug manufacturers who produce Viagra® and Cialis®, aren't stupid. They know their audience. However, it's the targeted audience [men] who scoff at the advertisements.

If you are watching the game with a buddy, you might hear him say: "That won't be me—I don't need pills to get it up!" Or, maybe you have said it yourself.

These responses are common among millions of men who often feel embarrassed or uncomfortable with one of life’s most natural occurrences—a lack of sexual desire and diminished sexual function. While testosterone normally decreases with age, in some men, low levels of testosterone may contribute to several debilitating conditions, including erectile dysfunction.

Recently, The National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health, announced the start of a large-scale clinical trial to evaluate the effect of testosterone therapy on older men. The study, led by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, will attempt to test the effectiveness of testosterone therapy in older men with low testosterone levels and one of the following conditions: impaired walking, low vitality, sexual or cognitive dysfunction.

Testosterone therapy may be a solution for many men who still have the desire to be sexually active, but suffer from erectile dysfunction. Increased levels of testosterone may help increase vitality and sexual response.

"We know that, as men get older, a significant proportion are unable to carry out activities of daily living and experience decreased physical and cognitive function and decreased independence," said NIA Director Richard J. Hodes, M.D.

Low serum testosterone may contribute to a number of problems affecting older men, including decreased ability to walk, loss of muscle mass and strength, decreased vitality, decreased sexual function, impaired cognition, cardiovascular disease and anemia. The new national clinical trial will test whether these conditions can be favorably affected by testosterone therapy.

But testosterone therapy is just one solution men can seek. Today, erectile dysfunction medications like Viagra® and Cialis® have an extremely high success rate. (See the differences between Viagra and Cialis) Men simply have to get over the embarrassment of asking their doctors about the condition, and feel more confident when communicating with their spouses about male health issues.

For more information, ask your doctor about starting a testosterone supplement program if you suffer from low testosterone. Also, ask about Viagra® or Cialis®. Your doctor can decide if an erectile dysfunctaion medication is right for you and recommend treatment options.

Should President Obama have a national discussion about race before leaving office?
Yes. There is too much racism, and he is the perfect one to address it.
Maybe. It wouldn't hurt to talk about, but I'm not sure if it will help.
No. He's the president--it's not his job to fix racial issues.
