Tuskegee's Historic Partnership with Curtis D. Robinson Men's Health Institute

(Mybrotha.COM) - A new partnership between Tuskegee University Cancer Research and the Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center/Curtis D. Robinson Men’s Health Institute of Hartford, CT recently began a significant undertaking that could have huge implications on men around the world.

According to a November 2010 article on the Tuskegee University website, the partnership was inked on November 8, 2010 with a signed a memorandum officially beginning a collaboration in hopes of combating and reducing prostate cancer incidence and mortality rates among black men. Representatives from each organization and Tuskegee Mayor Omar Neal were present for the historic moment.

From the Tuskegee News website: "In the last 700 days, we have found 25 men who were diagnosed with prostate cancer," says Curtis D. Robinson, a prostate cancer survivor and businessman who donated $1.1 million to launch the Connecticut institute in February. "These are people who would have died in eight or nine months. I'm so elated to be at Tuskegee today. I know we can find a cure for this. Our goal is to save lives."

In the online edition of the Tuskegee News, managing editor Jeff Thompson states: "The Tuskegee program has previously had only random samples for its cancer research, never really finding the exact answers as to why black men are plagued with prostate cancer at such alarming rates. The new partnership will allow Tuskegee to receive tissue from the surgeries black men have at Saint Francis. Those samples will open doors for consistent quality research."

Dr. Gilbert L. Rochon, President of the University, expressed an interest to continue the institution's collaborations in research.

"We are open to increasing partnerships, not only for prostate cancer, but for chronic, infectious diseases among the impoverished and genetically predisposed," says a quote from the website.

The George Washington Carver Humanitarian Award was presented to Robinson and his wife for their contributions and support for the Curtis D. Robinson partnership and other projects.

Tuskegee University is a national, independent, and state-related institution of higher learning that is located in the State of Alabama. The University has distinctive strengths in the sciences, architecture, business, engineering, health, and other professions, all structured on solid foundations in the liberal arts.
